Pregnancy is one of those every day miracles that happens all the time and we often forget how incredible it is.
A natural, innate process that brings about a whole array of changes in a woman's body. These changes can be incredibly exciting, enjoyable, daunting or difficult. Whichever the journey entails for you, it is important to acknowledge the huge changes taking place in your body.
While birth is a completely natural process our bodies often reflect the stresses they have experienced throughout life, impacting their inherent ability to adapt. Even the most balanced body is challenged with the additional hormonal and gravitational changes occurring.
Chiropractic and movement awareness are a wonderful way of supporting your body through pregnancy. The function of your spine, pelvis and neuromuscular system become paramount as your body adapts, nourishes your growing baby and you prepare for labour.
At Sage Health we bring together gentle and effective techniques safe for both mother and unborn baby that aid you to function at your best, adapt to new stresses, and to change with more flexibility and ease. We want to help you feel connected and to understand the change that this period brings about in your body so that you feel empowered and supported during this wonderful journey into motherhood.
The role of Chiropractic Care for Pregnancy and Birth
Correct pelvic alignment and mobility is important to ensure there is optimal room for your growing baby and can help improve ease of delivery. Releasing any tension or torsion in the ligaments and muscles supporting the uterus can help release any constraint of the uterus that may prevent the baby from moving into the optimal positioning for birth.
Maintaining integrity of the thoracic spine (mid back) can help alleviate mid back pain, shortness of breath and heartburn or reflux type symptoms.
Maintaining flexibility and supporting correct joint function of the thoracolumbar (mid-low back) and lumbosacral (low back) can help with other unnecessary discomforts such as constipation, frequent urination, sciatica, low back pain, symphysis pubic pain and pelvic pain.
Research has linked chiropractic with significantly reduced labour time - on average a 24% decrease in first time mothers and a 33% reduction in woman who have given birth before.
Movement for Pregnancy and Birth
Understanding your own body and how to utilise movement to support the changes taking place during pregnancy is a valuable tool. Movement and yoga can help your body adapt with ease, build strength and flexibility, and help you cultivate a strong mind body awareness. It is important to respect the different stages during pregnancy and use movements that are appropriate and nurturing for each stage. Another important aspect of movement is the influence on the baby's position in the womb. Optimal foetal positioning can be influenced by a mothers movements throughout pregnancy and during labour and an understanding and awareness of this is an extremely valuable tool during pregnancy.
